What causes the server snapshot error?

To help you with this problem, we analyzed and examined different reports from those affected themselves and realized that this failure is caused by various factors. As I always do, I am going to show you a list of the most frequent culprits of this error, so do not lose sight of it:

  • Domination game mode crashn: In case you didn’t know, the vast majority of users tend to see this error after disconnecting from an online game. That is, what happens when they play domination maps. Once the developers manage to identify the issue, you should be able to play the game without experiencing this issue.
  • NAT is not open: something you should be clear about is that there is a possibility that you will run into various instability problems when your NAT type is not open. To solve this situation, you have to make certain changes within the configuration of your router or PC.

Now that you have a clear idea of the causes that can lead to the server snapshot error in Call of Duty: Vanguard, we are going to go through the solutions that will help you prevent this problem from continuing to occur.

Methods to fix server snapshot error

As I just mentioned, in this section we are going to show you some techniques or methods that can help you solve the server snapshot error:

Stay away from the Domination game mode (for now)

Many of the reports made by affected players agree that the server snapshot error originates from playing in domination mode. For this reason, developers are looking for a way to recognize a direct connection. Of course, user reports will prompt an investigation to resolve the issue.

Even if the developers at Sledgehammer Games were able to successfully identify and fix the issue, it is best to avoid playing any game in domination mode, regardless of the map.

Here below we are going to show you a list with some game modes that apparently do not present this error. I recommend that you try to play in one of these modes until a corresponding patch is released for the game:

  • free for all
  • Team Deathmatch
  • Search and destroy
  • Death confirmed
  • difficult point
  • Patrol
  • Control

If you experience this error when playing in other game modes, try the solution that we will explain in the next section.

Achieve open NAT type

Since the server snapshot error seen in Call of Duty: Vanguard is not within your control, it is best to make sure your NAT is open.

Note: NAT is a metric used to determine how easy or difficult it is for your team to connect with other players when playing online.

In case your NAT type is closed, you should be prepared to encounter this error repeatedly, in part, because you will have problems maintaining an excellent connection with the rest of the players who are in the same lobby as you are.

Keep in mind that while Activision uses dedicated matchmaking servers, the game will always download and do a lot of the work, ie it configures itself based on the bandwidth of the players. For this reason, it is important that you make sure you have a type of NAT that is open.

Depending on the platform that is manifesting the error in question, the steps that will allow you to determine if your NAT is open or not are completely different. To help you with this, we have prepared 3 sub-guides for you to know how to see your NAT type and if it is open or closed.

Follow the one that is applicable to the platform of choice you use.

Check NAT type on Xbox One or Xbox Series S/X

To check your NAT type on your xbox Console, you should access the menu Network Configuration and check the status network current.

Here’s a tutorial that works on Xbox One, Xbox Series S, or Xbox Series X to verify the NAT type of your Xbox One installation:

If you’re experiencing the issue while playing the game on a PC, you need to open the Xbox Console Companion app and access the Network Configuration so you can see what the current state of the NAT type is.

Check the type of NAT on Playstation 4 and Playstation 5

If you are facing this problem on your PlayStation 4 or 5 console, you have to find a way to access the network settings to open the menu view connection status.

Here we leave you all the instructions that you must follow:

  • From the main panel of your PlayStation system, access the menu Setting.

  • Then, from the Settings menu that just appeared, access the menu Net.

Server Snapshot Error

  • Within the Network menu, access the section View connection status and check the status of your NAT.

Note: In case the NAT type that appears is different from type 2, you will have to follow the steps that we show you below so that you can open your NAT type.

Open NAT from your router settings

If each of the investigations you’ve run before revealed that you have a closed NAT, it’s most likely that the ports being used by Call of Duty Vanguard are not being forwarded correctly. If so, you’ll need to go into your router’s settings and enable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play).

I hope that each of the recommendations that we have described for you within this guide will be very useful to you in fixing the server snapshot error. Thank you for visiting our portal, we meet in a next opportunity.
