Troubleshoot Microphone Not Working With Ground Branch

Many Ground Branch players have had microphone issues while playing. This has been a common issue for many players who are unable to use in-game voice chat. This error is only seen on PC and seems much more common among people who use dedicated headsets. What causes the microphone not working with Ground Branch problem?

After many reports were posted by affected players, we took a closer look at this issue and put together a short list of all possible causes. It turns out that the root cause that could cause this type of problem on your PC may be different depending on your hardware and Windows settings.

These are the most common culprits known to cause this microphone not working issue with Ground Branch:

  • Microphone access disabled: In many cases, this problem was caused by the fact that access to the microphone was disabled. You can fix this by making sure microphone access is enabled from Windows Settings. You can check the Privacy and security section, Sound properties or Device manager.
  • Windows out of date– The fact that your microphone no longer works in Ground Branch and other games or applications may be due to the version of Windows you are using; Your version of Windows is likely out of date and is missing a key infrastructure update. Make sure you don’t miss any updates available for your Windows.
  • Incompatible microphone– Another reason why your microphone might not work while playing Ground Branch could be because the microphone is not supported by the game. Or it could be a simple bug that doesn’t allow you to use the microphone. Try plugging in another microphone and then test it to see if it works.
  • microphone not recognized – This error could also be caused by the game not recognizing your microphone for some reason. You can fix this issue by closing the game, then launching the ground force again to be able to recognize your device by speaking. This fix is ​​generally effective in situations where you’ve plugged in a new headset while the game is opening or running in the background.
  • Interfere with unused audio devices – Some players report that microphone not working could also be caused by some unused audio input devices sharing some drivers with active audio input (thereby creating a conflict). These devices could interfere with the microphone you are using and with the game, leaving it stuck or disabled. To fix this problem, you need to disable all unused audio input devices.
  • ‘Toggle’ mode enabled: the mic not working bug can also be triggered by the VOIP Mode Toggle, which is an in-game option. This mode is not yet implemented properly and you’d better use PTT instead. To fix this, you need to go to the game settings and change the Voice Input Mode to Push To Talk (PTT).
  • The admin muted it: Players who experienced this Ground Branch issue reported that it was caused by the administrator of the server they were playing on. Turns out the reason the microphone didn’t work on Ground Branch for them was because the admin muted them. In that case, the only thing you can do is ask the server administrator to unmute you.

How to fix microphone not working error with Ground Branch

Now that you know all the possible causes of this error, here is a list of methods that can help you fix this microphone issue:

1. Enable microphone access for Ground Branch

The first thing you can try when troubleshooting this issue is to enable microphone access to allow Ground Branch to use your microphone. In some cases, players found that access to their microphone was disabled, with no clear reason as to why and how it happened.

Note: This problem can arise if you have configured Windows to reject any request from a newly installed app or game to use the primary audio recording device.

If you find yourself in this particular scenario and want to investigate and see if this method is applicable, there are 3 ways to check if the microphone is disabled and enable it if necessary.

Note that all the methods below will help you achieve the same thing, just the execution is different.

Activate microphone privacy and security menu

To follow this method, you must first check if microphone access is enabled in the section Privacy and safety. You can find this section in the Setting from your computer.

This is how this is done:

Note: The instructions are identical regardless of whether you are following the steps below from Windows 10 or Windows 11.

  • Open a dialog Run pressing the Windows key + R and type into the search bar ‘ms-settings:’, then press Get in to open the Setting.
  • Now that you’re inside the Setting, go to the section Privacy & Security.

  • After that, scroll down the list of app permissions until you find Microphone. Once you find it, click on it.

  • Now make sure that the lever next to microphone access activated (blue button).

  • Once you’ve ensured microphone access is granted, open Ground Branch once again and start a multiplayer session to see if your microphone is now being picked up in-game.

Enable microphone from Sound Properties

If you want to avoid using the more modern audio interface menu (present in Windows 10 and Windows 11), you can also make sure your microphone is enabled from the menu sound properties.

For step-by-step instructions on how to do this, follow the guide below:

  • Press the Windows key + R to open a dialog Run and inside the search box type ‘ms-settings:’ to open the Setting.
  • Once you are inside the settings, select the section System and click on Sound.

  • Now scroll down until you see the devices input, then click the microphone it uses. Now make sure your microphone is enabled.
  • Start Ground Branch once again and see if your microphone now works while playing multiplayer sessions.

Enable the microphone from Device Manager

You can also check if the microphone is enabled from Device Manager. This method will work on all versions of Windows (including Windows 7 and Windows 8) and should be the preferred approach if you are familiar with the Device Manager interface.

Here are the steps on how to do it:

  • Open a dialog Run pressing the Windows key + Rthen write ‘devmgmt.msc’ into the search bar to open the Device administrator.
  • Once you’re inside the Device administrator, you must click on the arrow next to Tickets and audio outputs to expand the dropdown menu.
  • Right-click on the microphone you’re using and make sure it’s enabled.

  • After you have made sure that the microphone is enabled via Device Manager, launch the game once more and see if the problem is now fixed.

If the issue is still not resolved even after following one of the sub-guides above to make sure the microphone is working, move on to the next method below.

2. Update Windows to the latest version (if applicable)

The next thing you can do to try and fix the problem is to see if there are any Windows updates available that you missed and didn’t install.

It turns out that Ground Branch requires an update to Windows of key infrastructure to be able to render on low-end systems (using legacy GPUs) on Windows 11. Unless you install this critical infrastructure update in addition to your Windows installation, expect to experience both audio and graphics issues with certain maps.

Fortunately, the installation of the missing infrastructure update will be done automatically; all you need to do is access the Windows Update screen and install any pending updates until your operating system is up to date.

If you don’t know how to update your Windows, here are the steps to do it:

  • Press the Windows key + R to open a dialog Run. In the search bar, you must type the following command as is ‘ms-settings:’ and press the key Get in to open Setting.
  • Now that you’re on the menu Settingsearch Windows Update and select it by clicking on it once.

  • Then click on Search for updates in case there are no pending updates. Wait until it checks for new updates.

  • If you come across some new updates, install them by clicking the button Install Now and wait until the installation is finished.
  • Depending on how many updates are waiting to be installed, you may need to reboot before your operating system has a chance to install all pending items.

Note: This typically occurs in situations where there is more than one infrastructure update pending. In this case, restart your PC as instructed, but be sure to return to this Windows Update screen after the next startup completes to finish the remaining installation.

  • After installing the final update, restart your computer one last time.
  • Once the PC is back up and running, launch Ground Branch and test it to see if your microphone is now working.

In case your microphone is still not working only when playing Ground Branch (and other games), please check the next method below.

3. Connect another microphone and make it the default recording device

If none of the above methods have worked for you, some players have reported that what worked for them is to use another microphone instead.

If you have a spare microphone or headset, following this path will show you if your microphone needs to be changed in order to use it while playing Ground Branch.

Update: It turns out that there are certain legacy headsets that seem to be incompatible with the VoIP implementation within Ground Branch. In this case, there is no other solution than to use a different headset.

And keep in mind that simply plugging in your new headset or microphone won’t be enough; You should also make sure that the new headset you just connected is set as the default audio input device for Ground Branch to use by default.

Here are the steps to follow in case you don’t know how to make it your default input device:

  • Press the Windows key + R to open a dialog Run and type ‘ms-settings:’, then press the key Get in to open the Setting.
  • After that, select the section System and click Sound.

  • Now scroll down to Devices input and select the one you just connected.

  • After that, close the Setting and run Ground Branch to see if the other mic will work.

If you still notice that your microphone is not working while playing Ground Branch but is working for other apps or games, move on to the next method below.

4. Restart the game to recognize the new microphone.

This error can be caused by Ground Branch not being able to see your microphone.

In most cases, this issue occurs when you plug in your headset after starting the game (or while the game is minimized or running in the background)

In case the game does not recognize your microphone despite being plugged in, you can force it to recognize it by closing the game and then restarting it.

After closing the game and exiting to the desktop, unplug the microphone device and plug it back in. This will ensure that the microphone is connected to your PC.

Now you can open the game and test it to see if it recognizes your microphone.

If your microphone is being recognized and still not working, go to the next solution below.

5. Disable all unused audio input devices

Some affected players have managed to fix this issue by disabling all unused audio input devices on your PC.

This solution will be effective in those situations where you might be using two headsets at the same time and the game entity does not know which headset it is supposed to use.

Several users facing the same type of issue have confirmed that while they have more than one headset connected, the game disables both of them; this is most likely a development error caused by the fact that the headphones probably use the same driver.

So when one earbud is disabled to prevent it from interfering with the default, what’s really happening is that they’re both disabled.

If you suspect this scenario is applicable since you currently have more than one headset connected, follow the instructions below to disable all unused audio input devices from the Classic Control Panel menu of your Windows installation.

Here are the steps to follow if you don’t know how to do it:

  • Open a dialog Run pressing the key Windows + Rthen you must write the command ‘control’ into the search bar and press Get in to open the Control Panel.
  • Within the Control Panel menu, manually find the section Sound or use the search option on the right. When you find it, access it.

  • After that, go to the section Recording and right-click the device you’re not using, then click Deactivate to turn off the device.

  • Now repeat the process for each unused input device you see here.
  • After disabling unused voice devices, you can start Ground Branch and see if your microphone will work now.

In case your microphone is still not working even after making sure to disable all unused microphones currently connected to your system, skip to the next potential fix for this issue.

6. Enable then disable VOIP ‘Toggle’ mode in game

If you got this far without a resolution to fix your microphone issues in Ground Branch, another thing to try is clicking Voice Input Mode (from the in-game menu) and enabling Toggle mode, then disabling it again. You can do this from the main settings menu of the game.

This method was confirmed by many users that we are experiencing this issue on Windows 11; the fact that this simple solution worked for so many users supports the theory that the developer incorrectly implemented the VoIP solution for Ground Branch (for Windows 11 users).

If you haven’t tried this solution yet, follow the instructions below to enable and disable VOIP Toggle mode in the Ground Branch menu and see if you can fix your microphone issues:

  • Start Ground Branch and access the Setting of the game.

  • Now that you are inside the game settings, go to the tab Audio from the menu at the top.

  • After that, go to the category Communications and select voice input mode, then click Alternate. Once you’ve done that, click Apply to save the changes.
  • Now click on Mode voice input again and select the mode Push To Talk (PTT)then press Apply again.
  • After this, start playing the game to see if the microphone now works.

If the issue is still not resolved, move on to the next method below.

7. Enable/disable “Allow apps to take exclusive control of this device”

Another place to check to make sure your microphone is enabled is the Advanced of the Microphone Properties. Apparently, depending on the headset you’re using, the state of this toggle may be different from the other places you enabled your microphone (in the methods above).

In addition to enabling and disabling the microphone, you should also make sure to enable the “Allow apps to take exclusive control of this device“.

In case you don’t know how to find that option, here is a guide that will help you do it:

  • You must first open the Control Panel. To do this, press the key Windows + R to open a dialog Run and type inside the search bar ‘control’, then press Get in.
  • Once you’re inside the Control Panel, you must access the section Sound. You can search for it manually or you can use the search bar.

  • Now that you are inside the menu Sound, select the Recording section and right-click the microphone you use, then click Properties.

  • Once you see the Microphone Properties on your screen, go to the Advanced section.
  • After that, make sure to enable, disable, and enable again the Allow apps to take exclusive control of this device option. Leave the option enabled and click Apply.

  • Now you can start Ground Branch and see if the microphone is now usable.

In case this method doesn’t work as well, see below for the last thing you can try.

8. Ask the server administrator to unmute it (if applicable)

The last thing you can try is to ask the server admin if they muted you, and if so ask them to unmute you so you can use the microphone.

In some cases, players found that they were unable to use the microphone because the server administrator blocked their communications.

If none of the above methods fixed your problem, it’s worth at least asking him if he’s muted. Especially if you were reported or participated in activities that violated the community guidelines.

You can also try different servers to see if your microphone will work if you connect to a new server where you haven’t played before.
